Celestial (Pacific) Parrotlets by Jase

Forpus Coelestis Your Choice ?

Pacific Parrotlets are beautiful small birds with a big personality! They are lively within their cages, inquisitive and playful. They will investigate new 'toys' within their environment within a few hours and make full use of them. Wooden toys are good for chewing, along with ropes. We have had success supplying Olympic rings, hamster wheels and swings, especially to youngsters.

They are not generally noisy birds. They chirp in a 'sparrow like' fashion with an occasional call like a 'poorly oiled See-Saw !!' However several birds in close proximity can begin to generate some degree of volume with their chattering but is not as unbearable as the noise made by our lovebirds.

Babies in the box !
In my experience the hen lays a clutch of 4 to 5 eggs, one every other day. She incubates in earnest after the second egg. Eggs take 21 - 23 days to hatch. There can be around 10 days difference in age between the eldest and youngest chick. Using a nestbox camera it is interesting to watch the activity within the box. the male will preen the hen and will feed both hen and chicks. My chicks get feather plucked but no other signs of aggression are shown towards them.

Fledging
generally the chicks take about 30 to 35 days before fledging. This is an exciting time in itself as the most courageous bird attempts its first flight - or should I say 'dive'! After leaving the box the parents give lots of encouragement as they dart around the flight trying to get the youngster to test out its new skill. Once capable the cock shows some aggression towards the chick. It is at this point I remove them from their parents. Usually they are capable of feeding on small millets, EMP, apple etc. at this stage. The parents are likely to nest again soon.
